Tribute to Jacques Garnier (1934-1998),
ceramist / sculptor / designer
This year CeraMystic pays a special tribute to one of Quebec’s influential artists, Jacques Garnier (1934-1998) ceramist / sculptor / designer, whose impressive career and creative path included teaching, research and ceramic design. In the 60s, as Artistic Director of Céramique de Beauce, Garnier brought innovation and modernism to this pottery company, and later shared his passion and expertise with ceramics students at l’Institut des Arts Appliqués and Cégep du Vieux-Montréal. From his studio, Argile Vivante, Garnier created a sweeping diversity of expertly fashioned contemporary ceramics, both functional and sculptural. CeraMystic 2007 will display selected pieces of his work, photographs of which will be included in a commemorative catalogue. This special exhibit will be curated by Denis Longchamps and, on the opening day of the exhibit, the Jacques Garnier Foundation for the promotion of ceramic design will officially be launched.
